From the moment you step off the aircraft you truly know that you have arrived on a tropical holiday island. Assortments of cute thatched pavilions greet you as you are carted from the plane in an open wagon; these are the arrival hall and baggage claim areas…the only concession to modernity is a small motorized luggage conveyor belt.

Beyond the traditional tourist areas of Chaweng and Lamai, the pace of development has been slow and discreet. Early efforts to establish Koh Samui as a holiday home destination were somewhat mediocre, with availability of raw material limiting creativity. Today however, the new breed of developer is delivering property to a much higher standard; not only in terms of construction but also in terms of design.

The northern seaboard of the island, close to the airport, was the first to develop with holiday villas, but much of the exciting opportunities are now to be found in the south, around Ban Taling Ngam and Thong Krut.

Absolute beachfront property is all but impossible to find these days, more choice can be found on the hillside, which skirts more or less around the entire island. At 247 sq km. Koh Samui is Thailand’s third largest islands, behind Phuket and Koh Chang.

The range of property types available has grown since 2004. In addition to a wide selection of stand alone villas, a number of new developments are offering townhouses, and there are also some apartment projects underway.
