Krabi, on Thailand’s west coast, is just a two hours drive from its more illustrious neighbour Phuket, but it is on another planet when it comes to raw and breathtaking natural beauty. This is an area of stunning white sand beaches, studded by dramatic limestone karsts and over 130 picturesque islands…no wonder the Krabi and Phang Nga areas were chosen for Hollywood blockbusters, such as The Beach and The Man with the Golden Gun.

In 2005 a strategic plan for the Krabi region was commissioned by the local Planning Authority. The Thai Public Policy Institute and UC Berkeley (USA) produced a report which recommended a more measured and ‘green’ focused approach to development, learning from the experiences of more developed tourist centres, such as Phuket and Koh Samui.

Public works projects have been plentiful in the area and Krabi now boasts some of the best infrastructure in Thailand. The new airport (KBV) offers regular domestic services to Bangkok as well as a daily service to Singapore and weekly flights to Stockholm, Sweden. Good roads are to be found here along with a plentiful water supply, modern sewerage treatment and a reliable electricity grid.

For most holiday or retirement lifestyle investors the Holy Grail is to live on the coast, or at least with an ocean view. Much of Krabi’s high profile coastline has been claimed by local tourism projects; however, there are other, smaller, coves and beaches with development potential, as well as wonderful vistas to be found set back in the hilly hinterland.
 
If it is absolute beachfront or ocean view land you seek, then an excellent area is in nearby Koh Lanta. Sixty kilometres from Krabi Airport, Koh Lanta consists of two islands, with the larger southerly one (Koh Lanta Yai) attracting more attention. An agreement was signed in 2005 to develop Koh Lanta following the UN Development Programme charter, which emphasizes a sustainable, eco-friendly and culturally sensitive approach to development.
